S ub-Saharan African countries are creating businesses. Whether in the free market, informal economy, formal economy, government-regulated market, or capitalist market. There is no better time to be involved in entrepreneurship than today, as technology has lowered the entry barrier and has made processes more efficient for existing businesses.

Interestingly, Africans are solving the problems others have solved decades ago. Examples of these are Steve Jobs, China, Amazon, Lenovo, and so on. These have been able to use their own strength, coupled with technological advancement in the face of constraints, to achieve economic breakthroughs. Much of it is credited to how creative they became at tackling the problems. African startups, SMEs, businesses, entrepreneurs, and others can also achieve success when they are able to adopt business creativity in their practice.

The sub-Saharan regions have common problems such as some of these listed:

  • World’s highest level of poverty
  • Limited capital
  • Infrastructure deficits
  • Informal labour
  • Lack of structured support systems
  • Limited formal financing
  • Policy uncertainty

These challenges are the cause of business mortalities that happen daily. These are severe constraints. What makes it even harder is the fact that they come to us with an avalanche of problems to solve, but from a different angle in such an indeterministic manner.

Before African entrepreneurs succeed in businesses with such volatility, they also need to find creative ways to handle their activities. The business creativity framework is not a new approach. Some distance themselves from it because they believe the myth that it rewards randomness and an unsystematic approach to work. Contrary to that. Business creativity is what a pilot is to the aircraft, a driver is to the automobile, a chef is to the kitchen, and a doctor is to surgery.

Business creativity operates on systems. The ends justify the means. Ideas become valuable when they solve problems better than the alternatives. Because, as humans, we know we cannot settle for conventions and status quos when there is a need for change for growth, etc we move and we implement. And that is the reality in businesses today.

Because context matters. The business creativity framework, as I lead it, responds to African realities. And the way I am approaching it is for founders and businesses to internalize it in their own ways. At least the focus is on three areas:

  1. Capitalization and profitability (Cash Cow)
  2. Operations, people, and technology (House Style)
  3. Credibility, customer trust, and experience (Media Night)

The success of a startup is determined by how they pay attention to these three areas while running full steam ahead in some creative momentum (pun is intended). No way these areas can be developed evenly. Balance is important. And that is my approach with 500 STEAM. Business problems rarely belong to one discipline. I encourage interdisciplinary thinking.

       BUSINESS
      CREATIVITY

In more developed countries, entrepreneurs operate within integrated ecosystems—networks of capital, talent, mentorship, and infrastructure that sustain experimentation and growth. In many emerging markets, these systems are fragmented or inaccessible. Founders are left to assemble from friends, family, and chance encounters.

However, with 500 STEAM, even the modicum of support you get, you will learn how you can materialize it into something tangible by coming up with more novel ways to sell, gain trust, and leverage technology.
